Beauty from Within

I remembered when I was in University, I had a friend who was also a president of his singing club. Having a outgoing personality and a humble character, he made many friends. Having scored in most of his exams which was quite a remarkable achievement since University of London's exam structure is such that you only have 1 exam to determine your score for the module. It is like spending that whole year to study and attend lectures and thats it! One exam for each subject to determine your fate. He was indeed quite smart. However, he stopped coming for classes and had to stop managing his club for while. It was until then that I had an encounter of how cancer could just strike at any moment without warning.

He could not attend classes as he was too weak to go for classes and always having to vomit and feeling depressed because he could not do what he loved. Losing hair was also one of the most obvious change. Good thing he is a guy, cause he still look quite sty-lo being bald. Well, he used to look very fit, but when I visited him in hospital, he was so weak and fragile.

When I saw him at graduation, I felt really happy for him that he made it through. However, this may not be the case for some children who has been told they are suffering from cancer. And what about the parents who have been told that their child of 11 years old is diagnose with leukemia.

When it comes to contracting major sickness and living in Singapore, medical expenses is one the most crucial priority, the patient and his family has to bear. And having to deal with the overload of information and jargon that the doctors and specialist bombarded you with. It can be quite overwhelming.

This is where, the Children's Cancer Foundation dedicates their services to help kids and their parents to understand with such situation and helping them in their emotional, social and medical well-being.

You can help by donating or like my bestie, Jorlyn, who courageously shaved her head in bid to raise funds by showing encouragement to the kids.

Some might ask, why shave the head? Well Hair for Hope, an organization that has succeeded its 9th year campaign to raise awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore, to show children with cancer and their families that they are not alone in their fight against cancer. And to raise funds to help children with cancer and their families.

I don't think I would be able to shave my head, but I showed my support by donating! So I hope you can too! Every dollar donated, helps a child to go through this with strength.

Please click here to support! I want to donate! Her aim is to raise $10,000!
You may view the details of this campaign at Children Cancer Foundation

Simplicity of Life

Haven't been blogging for such a long time. I think I am deprived. Have been so busy these past few weeks with work, personal life, friends and all. But I would say last Sunday was one of best day of this year so far and I am believing for more of it. I have no idea why that day was so packed with activities. But I love it because I was not alone in the whole journey. And more importantly, I met new friends, got inspired, had a thought provoking experience and deep, meaningful chats with friends. A fruitful day.

I went for church service that morning, and had a great start of the day. Listening attentively to the sermon, where 2 sentences hit me.

"Before Promotion, There is Preparation." and
"Windows of Opportunity"

These 2 messages basically means recognising the seasons of life and be prepared for it.

He depicted recognizing windows of opportunities with the story of Marco Polo's journey to Mongolia.
One of the greatest opportunity missed to evangelised in the history of Christianity was this.

As he only gave a brief account, I found this website that gave a slightly more detailed background.

"Christianity came to the Mongolian steppes introduced by Nestorian missionaries from Central Asia as early as the 7th century. Yet many Mongols held fast to their belief in Shamanism. By the end of the 16th century many Mongols had converted to Lama Buddhism. The Mongolia today is rather traditional. But Christianity would not have even crossed the border if it hadn’t been for Kublai Khan whose mother was a Christian. He was the grandson of Genghis Khan and ruled when the Mongol Empire had reached its limit. It could not expand any farther, so Kublai concentrated on maintaining peace in his borders. When Marco Polo (1254 - 1323?) journeyed to China, he found evidence of Christian communities and served in the court of Kublai having become the Khan’s trusted friend. Kublai became interested in Christianity and even asked the Polo’s to bring back teachers and missionaries to his land. This request was never fulfilled. This may be one of the greatest lost missionary opportunities. Due to a continuing lack of Christian influence, the land remained in its Buddhist lifestyle. Today, they do not persecute Christians (though there are only a few), but they still firmly believe that Buddhism is the only true religion and even more so as a reaction to Christian missionary efforts. This antagonistic reaction is to preserve the Buddhist beliefs which are intertwined with Mongolian culture. They do not want to change after centuries of practicing Buddhism."
(source: www.hyperhistory.net/)

As the verse says "the harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few".

I begin to ask myself, if I was ready when God open up opportunities for me to harvest.

I read a book this morning and the verse seems to spring out to speak to me.
"Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you."
Hosea 10:12

The chapter started off with this verse and slowly elaborated the verse.

I am reading the point about "Sow for yourselves righteousness", Sowing is a time of recognising the season of your life and preparation for the harvest to come.

I asked myself again, what season of my life am I at?

Too big a question.

I am at a point of confusion.

What I can see now is I am closing to the end of one phase of my life and starting a new phase. A crucial point like a T-junction.

I decided to start small. I shall just start preparing myself for Higher conference (a Young Adult camp organized by my zone in church, a 3-day period where young adults gather to seek God and of course to have enjoy the trip, knowing my cell group, I believe it would extremely fun as well). I dont know why, but I felt the Lord spoke to me to go, so I happened to be one of the first few to signed up. I felt I needed a fresh start with God.

I felt God speaking to me through different people and situation. I could almost feel something great is about to happen and that my life is going to change. I am excited! Or maybe is changing right now at this point.

In the afternoon on the Sunday, I went for a talk and met one of the most inspirational man. A man of little words, but every word is full of power and wisdom. Inspiring and provoking. No la, I am not talking about Jesus. But at some point, I thought to myself, if this man was a preacher, he would have influence many to Christ. But in whichever way, he has inspired many and is a true leader who has the heart for people. I actually teared when he spoke with so much conviction of what he believes in.

In the late, lazy afternoon, I was doing one of my favourite activity. Nuaing! (relaxing)

Strolling down Haji Lane.....

Chanced upon a shop that sold amazing cupcakes

Tasting their famous Red Velvet Cupcake

My Fat Lady has captured my heart with their cupcakes

By nightfall, it was the best time to watch a movie and have a casual chat in the comfort of a stylish home and people from all walks of life sharing experiences and thoughts. I love it when people talk about films and views about life. Cause thats when you really know what people thinks. It was deep and meaningful.

And course, a kiss on the cheek to end the day was the best of it.

What the heck?

Its been a while since I blogged. Oh well, have been a little busy with my personal life, work and enrichment. This post is just a random ranting of the little things I got frustrated with. As what someone said that I have an anger quota to meet.. haha.. maybe he is right.

Rant no. 1: I lost my thumbdrive.
My collegues were all warning me not to buy it as it was super tiny. And being a scatterbrain girl, I tend to misplace things. But I was pretty insistent and bought it anyway. And lo and behold I lost it. Sigh. It was 8Gb! Thank goodness I have not stored much personal photos. Or I would be even more worried. But I really loved it.
Rant no. 2. Please give up you seats for the pregnant lady!
I recently had a conversation with some of my friends. 2 of them are young mothers now. And they are super cool and hot mama la! Haha, hope next time I can be like them. They were sharing about some difficulties that they faced when they were pregnant, especially at the MRT train, when people just refuse to give up their seats to them.

I am getting a little indignant about this.
When a woman is fully pregnant, she is carrying the weight of another human being of 12 kg. And its not as if she can remove it and put it on the floor like how we can unload of our heavy laptop and shopping bags on the floor. She has to carry it NO MATTER WHAT. Some guys complain about carrying heavy stuff for their girlfriends, then move your ass and understand how heavy it is for the pregnant woman!

But this is not just about the man, talking about it, I had an encounter with this man who flew from the other corner, and stepped on my foot just so he could sit on the freaking chair in front of me, that I was slowly getting to sit on. Talk about gentlemanly behavior, he almost ignite that roaring tigeress in me, ready to whip out my claws and pounced on him! ROARRRRRR!

Well, its not just about the men, but its the ladies too! Or I should say younger girls. As what the old uncle said, "all these xi gina, dont know how to be considerate."

It doesnt mean that they are younger means they should be ignorant. Haven't the sign put "for those who needs it"

And this doesnt applies to those are heavily pregnant, as long as she is pregnant, the basic courtesy is to give up the seat for her. Even if you mistaken a fat lady for being pregnant, (this is to be excercised with discretion la), its better to mistaken than miss it.

Talking about this, leads me to the next point, of the recent news on a HSBC staff refusing to give up his seat for an old man.

I had a little chat with my friends about how some old people demand to have the seats give up for them, we sometimes feel reluctant to give up, but if you ask me, whether or not they are nice or not nice, we should still give up. They are old for goodness sake! Asking an old uncle or auntie to stand for long hours its really very uncomfortable. Cant we extend a little kindness? Are we this calculative that only if you are an old and nice auntie or uncle, or when you ask me nicely, then I would give up my seat? The signs says it all? Haven't it? Or is the picture not clear enough?

I have no idea what the uncle's intention was when he connived and took photo of him, post it on FB and sent a letter of complaint to HSBC, like HSBC is his mother who is responsible of his upbringing. Oh well, I guess he is either bitter and a scheming person, or he realised this is a social problem, that people are ignoring the purpose of the sign, and just wanted justice done. Whatever the reason may be, I still think, the guy should give up the seat. Because he definitely needs it more than him and he was suay suay sitting at the seat with the sign, so he should give up.

Rant no. 3: I am angry for being a person who can't make up her mind in certain things. I wish I would dare to be daring. Maybe having lost something cos me to fear to gain and lose it again. I am in quite a dilemma. Can I just forget everything and go ahead with what heart tells me or I should go with what my head logically and rationally tells me. I am confused. I am dumbfounded. I choose to escape. Anyway, there will come a time I will not be able to tolerate and make a decision. More often than not, its to run away completely. which I fear its always the worst decision. Cant talk about it now, wanting to leave it aside for a while.

Will be posting on some light hearted stuff again.. FOOD!!! Its from an Shanghainese restaurant. As I am still awaiting to retrieve my pics, please bear with me.

A Thank You, A Welcome and An Encouragement Note

That's it, the people has voted. The mandate has been read.

Well, here is a closure to the election and the beginning of a new era.

Since I have not written any comments nor talk about the election before May 7, here is one that is after. I wish to write something before, but I decided not to, as I was still in deliberation of where my stand was. It was a hard choice, given that I in the district that was very much talked about, a result that has great effect on the nation. Every vote counts.

So here is a note to the Past MPs, the New MPs and Miss Tin Pei Ling.

_____________________________________________________________________

Dear Mr George Yeo and team,

Thank you for your hard work all these years, it has been a great honor to have you served the residents of Aljunied GRC. Your efforts are evident and the result of your effort are indisputable. Thank you especially to the two ladies, Miss Cynthia Phua and Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, and on behalf of my mum who had encounters with you when she was facing some difficulty, you have lend your listening ear and stretch your hand to help.

As a resident here for years, I have seen its changes since your team took over in 2006. And I have seen the teams' efforts of reaching out to the residents and making it a more homey and welcoming place with countless activities and detailed considerations to our increasing elderly folks in this district. A definite vast difference from the previous PAP team.

Though I have not participated in any of the activities organized by the PAP, but I do feel the vibrancy in the area from all the activities and family outings created.

You have done well. And I hope you will continue to serve in other ways and not be disheartened of the loss but embrace the new phase of your life.

Thank you very much Mr. George Yeo and Team.

______________________________________________________________________________

Dear Mr Low Thia Kiang and Team,

I welcome you and your team to our district, it has been a tough walk and I applaud you and your teams' courage and determination. But its only the beginning.

Though you have won this election, but its equally marginally as it is in the last election. It also means if the people can change their minds and vote for you this year, they may also sway and vote for PAP in the next election.

I would say that the people here are seriously putting on high stakes here, given that you and your team has not promise nor spoke with conviction of what you were going to do in this district and a loss of a team of outstanding and dedicated MPs and also probably the future comfort of new plans that the other districts would be able to enjoy ahead of us. All that, we, voters have in mind is for the nation's sake.

I am greatly impressed and moved by your speeches and your team's strategies and it does prove your creditability to lead the people to a place of what you called "A First World Parliament"  Though, I have my doubts, but I guess now we have 5 years to prove this motto, so I am willing to go along with a little faith here.

Since the mandate has been read, the people in Aljunied is in the same boat with you for the next 5 years. May it prove to the right choice and that Singapore truly progress to better governance.

______________________________________________________________________________

Dear Mrs Tin Pei Ling,

I would like to write this encouragement letter to you.

Maybe because you are representing the young generation in PAP, sorry to say, though I seriously do not think you deserve to be there, but I guess the verdict is announced that we would need to be forced to put a little trust here. So instead of complaining that you in the team, we can only embrace it with graciousness and mercy.

I hope at this point, you would have realized that you have won not because you were good. Cos the votes have spoken, even with Mr Goh, your team has won by a margin of 6%. It proves that people would rather have your whole team down and forgo Mr Goh, a man well respected by Singaporeans throughout, then to have you in it.

If you have thought you were safe now since your team won and you can happily collect your $15,000, I think this letter is redundant to you.

However, if you have some conscience and love for people, then we would still give you our respect. It is not easy for a young girl like you to withstand such pressure. You may be dragged into this whole thing and be constantly criticized and hated by many. I hope you would become stronger and learn from it. Forget the past of how people tease you with kate spade and the youtube videos of you saying"dont know what to say" or being criticized for blindly agreeing with whatever the PAP does. I hope you would grow from it and would prove to us that you know what to say in the next interview posted to you.

Even if you do not know how to handle politics, then, I beseech you to use your heart to handle every situation. If you have the heart for the people and Singapore in mind, no matter how difficult the situation or politics will be, it would never go wrong. And people will feel it.

Nicole Seah has lost in the election, but if you ask me, she has won hands down. And she is the ultimate winner, in the Marine Parade GRC, because in any politics, the hearts of the people also equates to power. But I think you can learn a thing or 2 from her, as the Chinese proverbs says, 知己知彼, 百战百胜. If we are all so pompous to think that our enemy's ideas and strategies are irrelevant especially one who can increase the votes from 0 to 59,833 to vote for the team, and thousands of "likes" in facebook, that's a huge mistake, I think there is something for everyone to learn from. She speaks with her heart.

So I have 3 words for you -  Humility, Love and Courage.

Humility to keep learning
Love for the people &
Courage to withstand all.

Well, that's all. Oh, and maybe next election, can you upgrade and buy LV instead, seems more A-Tas. (just kidding) All the best, Miss Tin.

My Crabby day!!!

Had an early celebration with my family for my birthday! yippee! And to feast on my favorite crabs. And yes when I eat crabs, I do not care about my "yi tai"

Okay, getting ready for my day!

There are indeed many places in Singapore you can find good crab restaurants. In case you didn't know, Chilli Crab is a seafood dish that originated in Singapore, created by a Singaporean couple. Who says Singaporeans have no creativity and we always need to engage foreign talent to create what is called our own..

Anyway, I wish to collate a whole list of food review on crabs, so here is my first. Though its not really a review, as I dont have time to really go in depth.
Well, as mentioned, there are many crab restaurants we can choose from, so it depends what type you feel like having that day, as most of them will be known for a certain dish. Jumbo is known for their award winning chilli crab and signature Black pepper crab.

- 2006: Awarded The Best Chilli Crab in Tiger Beer Chilli Crab Championship Series 2006
- 2007: ‘Best Seafood Dish’ in Tasty Chef Restaurant Association Singapore (RAS) Culinary
            Competition
- Excellent Food Award for exceptional culinary skills in Chilli & Black Pepper King Crab awarded by FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT guide for executives.

and many more awards....

We chose the outlet at ....

Jumbo Seafood @ NSRCC
10 Changi Coast Walk
SAFRA Resort
Singapore 499739
Tel: 6552-3435

A restaurant in a country club for Safra members, so if you have membership, you will enjoy 10% discount if I don't recall wrongly. If you go in the day, you will be able to enjoy a nice of tranquility of the green surrounding. You may even take a nice walk after the meal. An ideal place for family.

Opps. a candid shot my bro-in-law.

Our first dish!!!!

Braised Homemade Spinach Skin Beancurd with Mushroom.

Crispy-fried Baby Squid.

And here comes the main dish for the night!

Black pepper crabs!!!

 Scallops Wrapped in Yam Ring

And not to forget the mantou.. sorry I was too hungry liao. no time and no hand to take photos of the mantou, as they are all in my mouth.

Okay last but not least is to finish off with a nice desert.

 My happy and satisfied look.

Well, before the day ended, my bro-in-law drove me and my family to the nearest atm for me to do some urgent bank transfer. We chose one that is brightly lighted which is near a bus stop and a mall. My sister accompanied me and after I did my transfer, we walked back to the car.

I was chatting with my sister and did not realize a Bangladshi was walking extemely close me as I was facing my sister, who was on my right side. I didnt noticed at all that she started to slow down and was looking in my direction. Until, when we started to approach the waiting area where our car was, he walked right next to me. I am usually quite alert but today I was in a good mood and let my guard down.

I was happily chatting and swinging my hands normally as a person usually does when you walk, and my left hand swing straight to his ... ehem.. and gave a slightly hard hit. I immediately kept my hand to my side, and stared after the man as he walked faster, and when he turn slightly, I thought I saw a smile.

"ShIT!"

What did I just do?

My Sis later told me he was walking extremely close to me despite the road being very wide apart. And she was practically staring hard at him to back off.

well, its not the first time someone walk so damn close to try and do something funny. I was with my ex boyfriend, who practically looks quite tough and was walking side my side with me when we entered the MRT train. But this peculiar guy was walking so close to me that I could feel him sniffing my hair and his body, so close to me but not touching as he walk past me. And the train was not even crowded. We were the only 3 people entering to a relatively emptied train. Even in the train, I spotted him staring at me! Ello! My ex had to stare hard at him before the guy stopped and look another way.

Hmm... it got me to think, are we really that safe?

Anyway, my day was still good, don't wish to let some psychopath ruin my day.

Had a pleasant celebration with my family...

Hope you have a pleasant weekend.

Random thoughts for the day

Hmmm... realise I haven't been blogging much this month. Guess, I have been really busy with work and my social life.

I went for a casting last week, and I didn't realize I could cry on spot! I guess that day I was in a better mood to act.

I think only when I am doing filming, it makes me alive and truly happy. I seriously wish I can act in a good independent film one day. Currently, I am only able to do commercial ads and prints, cause of my work. I love my job too, don't mistaken. Just that there is always a primary and a secondary. And acting is definitely my primary.

That doesnt mean that I am a good actress in my daily life. I learnt to act on screen and stage, but once I am off the filming or scene, I am myself. its hard because sometimes you are so engaged in the role, but its a good practice to differentiate.

Talking about this casting that I did, I was suppose to be a victim. Okay, that's normal. Cause I have victim look written all over my face. Most of the roles that I am casted in is either a vunerable victim, if not, a mother. Mother? yes thats right. I have no idea why. In what way do I look like a mother I have no idea. I think maybe a shotgun, young mother la.

I love films that allows me to have lots of emotions. hmm.. I was chatting with a friend about films. And we both happen to like Wong Kai Wai films.

My first film I ever watched in a cinema theater, was Ashes of Time.

Both my sisters was so freakingly bored by it that they fell asleep. I was the only one fascinated by it. Even though I was only like Primary 4, and did not understand the film fully, I was in love with the show.

Chung King Express and In Mood for Love are other films I love too!

Chung King Express, was supposedly the first of the unofficial trilogy starring Tony Leung, which also includes In the Mood for Love and 2046.

I find the humor of how Tony Leung in the film would talk to his household items intriguing, as if they felt his sadness when he broke off with his girlfriend.

He would ask his soap why has it lost weight, and that they should both buck up and get over her even though he misses her.

Enjoy a glimpse of the film if you have not watched.

(P.S, I have taken those photos of the films online, if they are yours, and wish for it to be credited or removed. Just email me and I will do it accordingly. Thanks!)

When I first met you I was infatuated with you.

For many years, I dreamt about being with you.

Finally, one day I got a chance to be with you and learn more about you.

When I eventually got you. You flourish me with gifts.

You made me fall hard for you.

Whenever I was upset, you never fail to cheer me up.

Whenever I go shopping with you, you always provide for me.

Whenever I brought you to meet my friends, you always make me look so good with you around.

But one day, I found out you did such a thing to me.

How could you do this to me!!!

Don't you know I would be hurt!

You promise to provide for me

You promise to be there for me when there is emergency

You promise me!

But now you do this!

I am really upset and sad to end this relationship but I think I need to.

It kills me on the inside.

But I think its the best for us.

I still cannot believe you cost me to lose my entire bonus that I worked so hard for and still had no idea till I saw the freaking piece of paper called ----- "$x,xxx CREDIT CARD BILLS"!

New Year Continuation....

I have been so busy!!!!! I really wish to have more time to rest and watch TV... haha yes that my favourite past time. But ya, maybe because I just like being busy. I feel fufilled at the end of the day, as long as I know what I am busy with and ultimately the outcome of my busyness is what I have aimed.

Wanted to post this up long ago!

I bought this dress from Far East and totally fell in love with it. I wore it during Chinese New Year to pai nian... hehe. My relatives praised it to be really sweet looking. Not too overly red and harsh nor was it a too inauspicious black. I chose a subtle pastel pink.

Hmmm I was a little stunned when I took the photo, so I wasnt prepared to pose. hehe.
Going to share about a play I went in the next post.

Chinese New Year is coming!

Super excited about Chinese New Year! Nope, not because of Ang Bao or that fact that my relatives would start asking about boyfriends and marriage and stuff. Its because, I get to have REST!!!! I am so busy this whole week and the coming weeks. I am really in need of rest. My visitations to relatives' houses are quite short, given that we have estranged my maternal family clan due to many misunderstandings and unhappiness. Anyway, I am someone who loves to sleep, yes I admit I am a pig. I can rest in front of the TV for the whole day, but after reading an article that people who watches TV for more than 2 hrs a day is more prone to have heart diseases, I ceased watching TV for more than the recommended time. But I still love to laze around. I am so busy that I cant wait for 3 days of rest. Well, and also I get to eat lots of good food!!!!

To get a little feel of Chinese New Year, you've got to visit Chinatown and breathe in the air of new year meaning the smell of ang bao.. and food!!!See I am pig, I just cant resist.

So here we go!

The entrance of Chinatown.

A happy 财神 (God of fortune) to welcome you! With his golden ingot that hmmm looks like a hat to me. A iconic figure during Chinese New Year and days of gambling. Supposedly to bring good luck. But if you are playing mahjong, and all 4 players worships the 财神,won't he be confuse who to bless? Or if only you win, does it mean the  财神  likes you more. Oh well...

And not to forget bright red and shiny gold decors for your house! So the myths and legends we learn from our Hao Gong Ming. That in the olden days, the chinese uses red to scare off the beast called ," Nien" that ate children and their crops. So during Chinese New Year, we would decorate with much redness. Well, I kindof like this legend, and red always represent good luck. I cant imagine if the tradition is to use green or purple or even black, it would really look weird.

So being petite, I managed to squeeze through the crowd and mind you, I went on a weekday evening, and it was already bustling with throngs of people.

Auspicious accessories that you can hang on the new year plants like the Kamquat or the Pussy willow!

I found this store that sells 年糕 (rice cake), its considered good luck to eat nian gao during Chinese New Year,  because "nian gao" is homonym for "higher year." So by eating nian gao, it has the symbolism of raising oneself higher in each coming year (年年高升). Hmm.. I should eat more of this, hahaha.... If only eating this can grow taller. I would stuff myself with it.

Don't they look delicious!!! I love it when my dad cooks it with egg and fries it. Its totally yummy!!!!! Apparently, this store is quite well-known and was featured many times in the newspaper. Even the interior looks artistic and nostalgic.

Walking past the Chinatown food street with the overpriced and unhealthy fried food. Yes, I dont recommend this place at all. I rather walk the streets and gobble the food tasting that are freely provided, hahaha!

And of cos, you can cannot forget getting your Bak Kwa from Lim Chee Guan. Which I get to have it free from my Sister's mother-in-law. hehe! Well, of the bak kwa this seems to be most famous and authentic one, so give it a try but you might need to wait for a long time as its at its peak season.

Looking forward for it in less than 8 Days!!!!
